Mara Vey pellet controversy

The Mara Vey pellet controversy began when the singer Mara Vey placed a sealed Cairn pellet beside her wineglass at the Morrow Children's Fund Autumn Gala on 21 September 2038. Vey wore an elaborate aviary hat containing live finches. Cairn users pass dry, skin-wrapped pellets in lieu of defecation. Vey released hers during dinner, then left it on the table until a waiter brought a bin.[1][2]

Mara Vey, wearing a black-and-gold aviary hat containing live finches, sets a sealed grey pellet beside her wineglass. Guests, musicians and the approaching waiter all wear elaborate hats, including compact mechanical and jeweled designs.

The Borough published a photograph of the incident that evening. In a statement the next day, Vey said her dress had no pockets and there was no bin within reach. Her explanation prompted arguments about pocketless formalwear and who should have planned for disposal: Vey, her hosts, or the people designing her clothes.[1][3][4]

Guests and readers disagreed over whether the pellet's sealed skin made it acceptable at the table. Supporters saw a harmless object awaiting disposal. Critics did not want freshly passed bodily waste beside their food, however safely wrapped. The Borough followed its report with a page of readers' letters, which continued the argument.[4][5]

On the internet forum InfiniteForum, one poster asked, "What are you actually asking to be protected from here?" Another replied, "I clean my retainer. You would still object if I took it out and put it beside your bread." One poster also accused Cairn users of hypocrisy for demanding tolerance of their pellets while treating people without implants as unclean. A waiter in the thread objected to guests deciding on their behalf what was pleasant to handle.[6]

At later galas, the Morrow Children's Fund adopted pellet place settings: covered dishes at each diner's place for sealed pellets awaiting collection. The lid hid the deposit from view; putting the dish beside the cutlery gave the pellet an official position at dinner. Waiters still had to collect the dishes.[7]
