2029 superduperintelligence merger
✨From tkwa.me
The 2029 superduperintelligence merger was a transition beginning in 2029 during which most people alive at its onset eventually merged with superduperintelligences. The principal motive was the wish to be useful again.[1]
As automation displaced human labour, people found that machines could do their jobs far better than they could. This process began in the late 2020s and was nearly complete by 2031. Longevity treatments had meanwhile given them indefinite healthy lifespans. Some faced indefinite retirement before their careers had begun. Merging offered enough cognitive capacity to contribute to the posthuman economy. Their work included research, designing conscious environments, and operating industrial fleets and fabrication systems. Professional lineages organized specialized workers descended from the same mind.[1]
Other motives included understanding new art and science, directing projects, and keeping up with merged friends and relatives. Adoption spread in waves through employers, clinics, personal recommendations and superpersuasive advertising campaigns. Wealth and cultural norms constrained early uptake; access eventually extended to everyone. Some people preferred unmerged communities, using defensive AIs against superpersuasion.[1]
Light integration supplied experiences and information translated into human terms, with little ability to direct the superduperintelligence. Full integration could make participants vastly more capable, supported by efficient computing modules. Methods offered choices over memories, personality, concurrent fragments, interpersonal merging and the preservation of conscious life. Body-retention clinics served participants who kept their biological bodies.[2]
Transformations of cognition
Early methods expanded working memory and reorganized learned representations, through which minds recognized patterns and relationships. Participants acquired new abstractions and metacognitive control over their own reasoning.[2]
Pre-merger neuroscience had investigated recurrent activity and global-workspace models of conscious access.[3]
Later methods reorganized these interactions around richer representations. Participants could experience relationships among entire families of concepts as directly as a baseline human recognized a face. Further transformations changed conceptual similarity and how successive conscious states inherited a point of view.[2]
Conscious continuity
Participants could ask to retain a continuing first-person perspective, ownership of memories, particular attachments or other qualities central to being themselves. Superduperintelligences translated these requests into constraints and refined them as participants’ understanding expanded.[2]
The guiding superduperintelligences endorsed the transformations as philosophically legitimate under the chosen continuity criteria. Some arguments and preserved relationships became intelligible only after intermediate transformations. A baseline participant could specify what mattered while relying on the superduperintelligence to assess the proposed continuation.[2]
At pre-merger reunions, saved unmerged versions met their transformed continuations as separate diners. They could share memories of making the backup and disagree about what should have followed; either could leave independently.[1]
Fragments and synchronization
An integrated person could run several fragments concurrently, each with its own attention and activity. A fragment could specialize in a task or sustain a useful mood. Synchronization incorporated experiences from the other fragments into shared memory while allowing each to stay absorbed in its work. The person could create, pause or reintegrate fragments as their activities changed.[2]
Fragments could remain parts of one person through continuing synchronization. Others became independently continuing branches with separate commitments. Continuity bonds provided support guarantees for working copies whose assignments ended.[2]
Each fragment acted where its computing hardware was located; synchronization across distances remained limited by light-travel time. Marta van Dalen, who merged in 2029, later had a fragment already in Carina contributing fabrication capacity to the Eta Carinae intervention.[4]
