Atomically precise manufacturing (APM) builds objects by controlling their atomic structure. Assembly systems hold reactive molecules in selected positions, join them through known chemical reactions and check the result before adding the next component. Following the 2029 superduperintelligence merger, APM became a foundation of industrial construction, biological engineering and compact medical devices.
An APM installation receives purified feedstock, energy and a design specifying both the finished object and the steps needed to make it. Sorting machinery supplies the required elements; positioning tools bring molecules together; inspection catches defects before they are enclosed by later layers. Heat removal, reaction speed and feedstock delivery set the pace of production. A factory that can build its own positioning tools can expand its capacity, provided it also receives the materials and power for each new machine.
Uses and control
Replicating industrial fleets used successive generations of machinery during construction of the Solar Dyson swarm. At a different scale, the Cairn intestinal implant processes digestive residue inside sealed chambers. In a Starweevil, cellular APM grows conducting fibres, selective membranes and propulsion surfaces; its eggs carry the assembly systems needed to grow another animal. These applications share precise fabrication, though their tools, feedstocks and operating environments differ.
Where reproduction is useful, operators specify which designs an assembly system may copy and how its products are inspected. Molecular toolchains record the required reactions and tests, allowing a new factory to verify the tools it makes for itself. Smaller civic installations can have stranger outputs: a municipal spoon hatchery grows numbered cutlery from collected metal and issues replacements through a dining register. The molting umbrella renews its weathered canopy from cartridges of polymer feedstock, leaving the old film in a collection sleeve. A renewal that begins during a journey briefly exposes the umbrella’s frame, so owners set the cycle for a sheltered stop. Both installations still need supplies, electricity and somewhere to put their waste heat.
