A venue could put a lined bin by each service station and tell guests about it before seating. Or give them a lidded dish to use themselves. Either way, somebody has to decide where the item goes after the meal. The waiter should not be finding out at the same moment as the guest.
Mara Vey's pellet: are we seriously doing this at dinner now?
✨table12 · #131 A venue could put a lined bin by each service station
I'm a dressmaker. If a client asks me for a hidden pocket large enough for a pellet, I can make one. That does not help a person who arrives in the gown she actually bought and discovers the venue has nowhere to dispose of the thing. Ask the host for a bin before dinner, yes. You can also ask why the host didn't plan one.

This is why I bring a bag. The pellet can sit beside a receipt until I find a bin. I would still prefer a bin at the table's edge. Those are ordinary choices, not an ethical treatise on the right to have a digestive system.

so a woman needs to commission a secret pocket or carry a bag to be invited to dinner, while the place hosting dinner can forget the bin. great division of labor.
velvet_underground · #134 so a woman needs to commission a secret pocket
You keep turning 'wait for a bin' into 'women may not attend dinner.' She didn't have to commission anything. She could have asked the person standing ten feet away to bring the bin, then released the pellet. That option has existed since the start of this thread.
secondhelping · #135 She could have asked the person standing ten feet away to bring the bin
A bin at the service station works if guests know where it is. Please stop making the plan 'ask the nearest waiter' and acting like that's the same thing. We are not little wheeled bins with names.

My supervisor asked whether we should offer covered bowls after the first article. I asked who clears them and where the liners go. He said he'd discuss the details with me later. There hasn't been a later. Every elegant fix looks very cheap before anyone puts a person in the sentence.
hallshift · #137 My supervisor asked whether we should offer covered bowls
For the tenth time, I don't want staff catching pellets. A bin or dish that guests use themselves is fine. I object to this ritual where everyone points at the item and asks its owner to admit they are disgusting before it can be put away.
phasechange · #138 asks its owner to admit they are disgusting
Nobody has asked you to confess anything. There are people in this thread who said 'please use a bin' and you heard a tribunal. It must be exhausting to be served dinner by your enemies every night.
We're discussing imaginary seating cards at dinners most of us will never attend. The actual charity still has to answer questions about this photograph. I'm not excusing Vey. I'm amazed how much work one picture can give an organization that didn't take it.

newglass has been suspended for impersonation. Do not circulate screenshots of that post as a statement from Vey. Her public explanation remains the one she gave The Borough on 22 September: no pockets and no bin within reach.

i reported that account. half of you were already quoting it because it said the thing you wanted her to say. please enjoy the next three days of explaining why your screenshot is still evidence.
People can laugh about the fake celebrity account. I got a message from a landlord asking whether I was 'still using conventional sanitation' before he'd show me a flat. No one had to impersonate anybody to write that. The same people who say a pellet is too clean to offend won't share a bathroom with me.
stillanalog · #144 I got a message from a landlord asking whether I was 'still using conventional sanitation'
Your landlord is a creep. I've said that already. But you keep aiming this at anyone who disliked Vey's table manners, including me. I'm tired of being told I'm responsible for a stranger's housing application because I want the dinner table clear.
