Supernova cancellation insurance

Supernova cancellation insurance covered stellar viewing stations when engineering prevented a star they had booked for observation from exploding. Policies paid on verified engineering cancellation. A star's uncertain collapse date could leave audiences waiting for an indeterminate period.

Stations used the coverage when taking reservations for possible future explosions. The first nine policies, issued in 10479 for Eta Carinae viewing stations, covered 7,630 reserved places. Their benefit equalled the booked value of those places. The insured event was deliberate prevention of an explosion forecast for 12477 to 14477; a claim required evidence that engineering had removed that prospect.
The Carina Recovery Authority's intervention removed most of the primary star's mass before an iron core formed. Active stripping ended in 11330, but the remaining object was observed for another thirty years before the Authority confirmed its stability. After verification in 11360, insurers paid the stations' cancellation claims. Stations could offer reconstructed explosions to ticket holders as substitute performances. The coverage gave viewing stations a financial interest in the intervention, alongside their interest in the anticipated spectacle.
Stations catering to millennial breakfast clubs maintain reservation records while audiences remain dormant for the thousand years between meetings; cancellation notices wait with those records until the members resume. Bookings for pre-merger reunions can reserve separate places for a person's saved unmerged version and a transformed continuation. The reservation ledger counts their purchased places separately, despite their shared earlier identity. Cancellation settlements follow the insured booking terms.
